Business Work Within or From One’s Home
Historically, people did business within their homes, or used their homes as a base for operations. In certain rural communities today, the practice of professional service and and cottage industries is still prevalent. These areas commonly have medical practitioners, dentists, building tradesmen, and enterprises producing or selling processed food, that maintain operations within or from the home. Entrepreneurship has been one of the driving forces that helped human kind “conquer the world”. That force has shaped industries with offices and plants away from the domicile of people, requiring them to travel daily to and from work (with many spending a substantial portion of the day devoted to the commute). That same entrepreneurial spirit, however, is also fueling the trend for many people to go back to home-based business opportunities as a means of getting out of the rat race.
Ideally, people should set up a home business with minimum entry barriers and low capital investment. Enterprises that focus on the provision of goods or services that people look for, yet not many other businesses offer within the immediate locality do make money. It is inevitable, however, for others to emulate the success of a trailblazer, which increases competition. A home business operator must devise means of maintaining a unique selling or service attribute (to keep an edge and sustain a profitable client base) when this occurs.
Various websites provide eLearning courses that cover basic business fundamentals and how to jump-start a home business. These provide guidelines on how to craft a workable business plan tailored to what the would-be entrepreneur has in mind. Other websites provide information on how to obtain business loans and recommend financial assistance sources for augmenting capital or operating funds.
Other websites provide checklists on pertinent laws and regulations that have to be complied with for securing a permit for a home business. Certain businesses may not be allowed to operate within or from a residential zone. There are localities sensitive to traffic congestion the business may bring in, or to goods containing materials hazardous to the health and safety of people and the environment. Home businesses that impinge on social or cultural norms particular to the area may not be allowed.
Home based operators do not necessarily need to set up an enterprise. People can work for business processing companies as home-based partners or free-lance agents. Others work effectively from the home as online direct marketers and sellers for the products of certain companies. There are many today who earn a decent income writing blogs and web content.
Working from the home as an entrepreneur or agent requires more than a college degree, persistence and/or finding the right business to focus on. The individual must be adept at optimizing use of applicable technology and media to build a network of connections that can sustain a home based business undertaking.
